Video game Halloween treats

Better than candy.

Hand out HiScores this Halloween.

A jack-o’-lantern bowl on a porch at night, heaped with paper candy bars cut from the sheet, each wrapper in a game’s colours with a window on the game, its name and a QR code, and a card propped beside it: “Take one! Every bar is a free game. Scan it and play.”

Fill the bowl with fun-size HiScores

Print a page of candy bars, cut them out and put them where the candy goes: in the bowl on the porch, or one in every bag. Each fun-size wrapper is a different game, with a window on it, its name and a code straight to it: the house games, and Rocket Roadster, made with GameBuilder. The king-size bar is for the kid who would rather make one: 250 Builder Bot Tokens free with sign-up, to build a game and set its HiScore.

  • Free for you. Print as many as you like at home. Every game on them is free to play.
  • Fun for everybody. Thirty seconds a game, a HiScore to beat, and the whole block on the board.
  • Safe for every kid. No sugar, no nuts, nothing to unwrap. No sign-up, no app to install, nothing to buy.
Print the candy barsThe HiScore fun-size candy sheet: “Trick or treat! Fun-size HiScores.” over a mixed bag of candy-bar wrappers, one each for Rocket Roadster and Pin High, Skeet, Red Zone, Top Shelf, and Hoops: two big share-size bars, Rocket Roadster and Top Shelf, each beside two tall fun-size bars standing on end, and a king-size bar across the foot, with dashed lines to cut along. Each wrapper is crimped at both ends and split on a slant into its game’s two colours, with a window on the game stamped with its size, the HiScore.app mark, the game’s name in big slanted white letters, how long it is and “0 g sugar” (Rocket Roadster’s says “Made with” over the GameBuilder logo), and a QR code to scan to play. The king-size bar is violet, with a GameBuilder bot in its window, “GameBuilder on HiScore.app”, “Build your own game. Free with sign-up: 250 Builder Bot Tokens.”, a burst saying “Free 250 Bot tokens”, and a QR code to scan to build, or go to hiscore.app/build/game.

How it works

  1. Print the poster, write in your HiScore, and cut the tabs.

  2. Put it up where the candy bowl goes.

  3. Kids scan, play, and dare the block to beat their HiScore.

The poster

One letter-size page on its side, made for the kids at your door: “Free video game. Get the HiScore.” A note is taped on with a code to scan; write in your tag and your HiScore, and the best score on the block is theirs to take. 10 pull tabs along the bottom, each a fun-size candy bar of a game, with a code straight to it and “Beat my HiScore”.

The HiScore Halloween poster, landscape. A night-sky panel says “Trick or treat! Free video game. Get the HiScore.” beside three phones fanned out under a full moon and bats, playing Pin High, Top Shelf and Red Zone, with a “Free to play” sticker, jack-o’-lanterns and a GameBuilder bot carrying a candy pail. Taped on: a note with a QR code, “Scan me. Beat my HiScore.” and blanks for your tag and your HiScore. Then “Take one!” over 10 tear-off tabs, each a fun-size candy bar of Pin High, Skeet, Red Zone, Top Shelf, and Hoops in turn, with a QR code and “Beat my HiScore”.

For parents

Is it free?

Yes. Every public game on HiScore is free to play. There’s nothing to buy to play.

Do kids sign up?

No. Guests play with a tag, the name on the board, and nothing else. Claiming an account is optional, and takes a phone number or an email. Signing up is what the king-size bar is for: a new account starts with 250 Builder Bot Tokens, to build a game of its own. Playing never takes tokens. Accounts are for 13 and up.

What do they play?

Pin High, Skeet, Red Zone, Top Shelf, and Hoops: thirty seconds a round, or three holes of golf on Pin High. Plus the games people build with the GameBuilder bots, and the list keeps growing.
